Keeping Seniors Safe this Summer in San Diego’s Hot Weather

With an extreme drought and heat waves this year’s summer will be a difficult one to manage. Throughout the San Diego region temperatures can soar during the summer months. Not only can these temperatures be uncomfortable, they can be detrimental to health. Among those at high risk of health disparities, include our local seniors. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are about 650 heat related deaths each summer nationally. This statistic continues to rise annually. What is even more concerning is that half of these deaths consist of people aged 65 and older. It is important for seniors to become educated on the dangers of high temperatures and the safety measures that must be taken to stay healthy during summer months. As most know, the body functionally slows during the aging process. This is not always an issue however, when it comes to heat waves, the body cannot recognize as quickly temperature changes and our body’s temperature regulators do not work as well. Without the body recognizing heat, you become more susceptible to heat cramps, heat syncope, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. All of which can be very detrimental on the body. Steps to Stay Healthy in the Heat Although heat is harder on the body as we age, there are steps that can be taken in order to stay healthy and thrive during hot summer months. These include the following: Water – Drink fluids throughout the day even if you do not feel thirsty. As stated before, the body becomes slow to regulate temperature.
